Many of our patients are interested in consultations that incorporate Osteopathic Medicine and Functional Medicine. That's fine with us! We request that you choose the consultation you would like to be the focus of your appointment and when in doubt, choose a Functional Medicine booking because it gives us the most time to get to know you and your goals.
Health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being in which disease and infirmity are absent; it is a state of vitality. We believe that everyone is biochemically and structurally unique and deserves a tailored approach to their health. We take into account all aspects of your life, including: what you eat, how your sleep, your levels of stress, your relationships, your personal body chemistry, your daily activities, your exercise, your past injuries, and structural changes to your body and we help you formulate a personalized roadmap back to your health and vitality.
Osteopathic medicine is a form of medicine that focuses on the patient and emphasizes the role of all of the body systems, including the musculoskeletal system—the bones, muscles, cartilage, ligaments, and joints that provide the movement, support, and stability for the human body—for staying healthy. The founder of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, MD/DO believed that the body is a triune of body mind, and spirit that can not be separated, but can be influenced. He chose the musculoskeletal system as his focus to bring about change in the body; he saw all other organ systems as a way to provide what is essential to the human body: movement. He used the structure of the body to change its function and influence all aspects of our being. Today, we now know that the structure of the body greatly dictates its physiologic and biochemical processes at a cellular level.
In the United States, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO’s) are fully trained physicians, licensed to practice the entire range and scope of medicine and surgery. US-trained DOs attend their own medical schools, receive the same post-graduate training as their MD colleagues, and receive additional education in the principles of osteopathic medicine, applied in practice as osteopathic manipulative treatment. Osteopathic medicine is a system of medicine that recognizes the dynamic relationship of structure and function in health and disease.
Integrative and Functional Medicine
From the Institute for Functional Medicine: "The Functional Medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes. By addressing the root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of the disease. They may find one condition has many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, Functional Medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual."
Our physicians believe that cutting-edge science can only be applied with a thorough understanding of you as an individual. We use the latest technology in functional medicine by applying The Living Matrix to identify key areas of your life, habits, and genetic makeup that make you vulnerable to disease. We get to know you as an individual to suggest lifestyle changes to increase your resilience to disease. We believe that ultimate wellness lives in a fully realized self, encompassing your physical, mental, and spiritual wellness.
Both of our physicians are graduates of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine through the University of Arizona. We will work with you as your partner in the healing process on your journey toward health and wellness.
What are the Defining Principles of Integrative Medicine?
1. Patient and practitioner are partners in the healing process.
2. All factors that influence health, wellness, and disease are taken into consideration, including mind, spirit, and community, as well as the body.
3. Appropriate use of both conventional and alternative methods facilitates the body's innate healing response.
4. Effective interventions that are natural and less invasive should be used whenever possible.
5. Good medicine is based on good science. It is inquiry-driven and open to new paradigms.
6. Alongside the concept of treatment, the broader concepts of health promotion and the prevention of illness are paramount.
7. Practitioners of integrative medicine should exemplify its principles and commit themselves to self-exploration and self-development.
According to Dr. William Cole from the Institute for Functional Medicine, there are five defining features of Functional Medicine:
1. Functional Medicine views us all as being different; genetically and biochemically unique. This personalized health care treats the individual, not the disease. It supports the normal healing mechanisms of the body, naturally, rather than attacking the disease directly.
2. Functional Medicine is deeply science-based. The latest research shows us that what happens within us is connected in a complicated network or web of relationships. Understanding those relationships allows us to see deep into the functioning of the body.
3. Your body is intelligent and has the capacity for self-regulation, which expresses itself through a dynamic balance of all your body systems.
4. Your body has the ability to heal and prevent nearly all the diseases of aging.
5. Health is not just the absence of disease, but a state of immense vitality.
Our physicians are both board-certified in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and are trained to evaluate the structure and function of the body. Background in osteopathic medicine gives the physicians a unique perspective as to how the body’s systems are interconnected and how each one affects the others. Both physicians are experts in osteopathic manipulation and can identify changes in postural stance, range of motion of the joints, and evaluation of the functional capacity of the body.
After a detailed history of you and your health, the physician will conduct an osteopathic structural evaluation. This consists of checking your strength, sensation, range of motion of your joints, and palpation of the entire structure of your body. This helps the physician identify the root cause of your issues. After this is complete, the physician will then use hands-on techniques to treat their findings. These techniques can be directed at the bones, fascia, muscles, nerves, and fluids of your body. Sometimes, tools may be used to aid the physician such as a percussion hammer. These will be discussed with you during your visit. After your consultation, specific recommendations for stretches, exercises, and meditation techniques to self-optimize neuromuscular health and function will be recommended. When applicable, PhysitrackTM will be used for our patients to send professional videos and examples of each of the exercises prescribed.
